As Alison Wonderland once said on Insomniac’s Night Owl Radio: asking a woman how it feels to be “one of the only women DJs in the industry kind of answers that very question already. Women who do make the decision of pursuing a career dominated by men can come with the same backlash and alienation as several other paths of work for women, and just like those jobs, there needs to be more of a push for equality to stop the tired stigma against them. This is where the PRS Foundation comes in.

The foundation’s goal is the Keystone initiative, which plans to collaborate with several lineups to push the gender gap to an even 50/50 by 2022. Its an ambitious plan, but with the support of 45 companies it’s already off to an amazing start.

PRS Foundation chief Vanessa Reid says:

Our focus on gender equality in 2018 aligns with the centenary for some women being given the vote in the UK. 100 years on, the push for gender parity across society continues and with increased public awareness of inequalities across the creative industries, we have an opportunity to respond and commit to tangible change in music.

The Keychange network of female artists and industry professionals and the festival partners’ idea of establishing a collective pledge will significantly accelerate change. I hope that this will be the start of a more balanced industry which will result in benefits for everyone.
