June 9th will be the last day people under 21 will be able to purchase cigarettes in California – a very interesting turn of events for the electronic event community.

On one hand, high school students will have less access to tobacco from that one friend who just turned 18; on the other, there is a high chance of increased misdemeanors among those who don’t quite listen to the law.

And of course there’s the totally new rules promoters must make before June in terms of how they regulate their smokers: either fill their beer gardens with tobacco or create new areas for the smoking activity to happen…not to mention the lack of smoke that must be maintained on the dancefloors.

Governor Jerry Brown’s decision to raise the age makes two states that will have older smokers; is this the beginning of a snowball effect? How strict will the law in California really be? Only time will tell.
