The creators of the MP3 audio format at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits recently announced that its “licensing program for certain MP3 related patents and software of Technicolor and Fraunhofer IIS has been terminated.” According to Bernhard Grill, director of that Fraunhofer division and a principle engineer in the development of the MP3, AAC or “Advanced Audio Coding” which his organization also helped create is now the standard for music downloads. When the MP3 was created, engineers were working with incomplete information about how brains process sound, so the MP3 is now simply obsolete when compared to newer formats that are built upon new information. Additionally, AAC has become the top multimedia format because of its efficiency and advanced functionality.
