We’re not mad at this: a new UK law proposition has targeted website bots that bypass maximum ticket restrictions in order to sell them at a higher price. Essentially, if found guilty, the individuals who attempt these sales will be subject to “unlimited fines” from the government. Matt Hancock, Minister of State and Digital Culture, says that the practice of ripping off people who did their due diligence to be in line first to buy tickets for shows is unacceptable. He goes a step further by putting some responsibility in the hands of promoters.

“It’s unacceptable that touts are misusing technology to bypass security measures and buy up vast numbers of tickets before real fans get the chance, only to sell them on at rip-off prices,” said Matt Hancock, Minister of State for Digital and Culture.

“It’s a growing problem that affects too many people,” he continued. “Ticket sellers also need to do more, by improving transparency and ensuring that they are acting in the best interests of consumers and help the market work for everyone.”

Despite the U.S. Laws in place to try and stop bots, there’s more to be done to stop the scalping altogether. For now, the best we can do is be vigilant about buying from a third party if it comes to that.
