Carnage jumped on twitter to share his take on what an opening DJ should and shouldn’t play. This take on the subject runs contrary to what headlining acts have preached for years:
Openers should always bang it out… if the headlining dj gets mad at you… it just shows that they’re insecure… that one opening slot might be infront of an important agent or promoter… give it your all… it could make or break you !
— CARNAGE (@djcarnage) December 1, 2019
I usually never play something an opener is playing… if your folder of music is diverse enough.. you don’t have to worry about the opener or anyone else on the bill… just do you !
— CARNAGE (@djcarnage) December 2, 2019
Several DJs called out against this, but some actually agreed with the mentality.
Carnage mainly refers to bigger hard ticket shows with multiple acts on a bill. The tribal knowledge that has led several DJs to respond in disagreement so far is in regards to a traditional club environment in which a DJ is controlling the energy of the night. With the new atmosphere that Dance music inspires(and especially considering the boom of Bass Music and Trap in this regard), the producer brings up an insightful opinion to today’s conversation

My point is go hard, go soft, go pretty, go dark, go anything but above all just try and make it your own sound
— wüki (@Wuki) December 3, 2019
this is awful advice lol
when the opening DJ plays an all riddim set at 9, it fucks up the energy buildup/flow of a show, no matter how good the headliner is. also contrary to popular belief, you CAN play a fun/energetic set without dropping a million trap/dubstep bangers https://t.co/B9EANm95vN
— Litty Kitty (@HexCougar) December 2, 2019
as an opening DJ, you’re a guest of the headliner at THEIR show – this isn’t the time to try to outshine them/steal the show/prove what an insane DJ you are to any agents/promoters that might be in the crowd. have fun, play your own music, but always be respectful

The f**k this guy talking about https://t.co/c0uwJMzDGS

How many new up and coming djs careers will carnage end with this tweet?
May be different in America – but if u do this in Australia, that’ll be ur last gig https://t.co/NSO8PQRwTm

I like this. I always get nervous on support slots about going too hard but my manager @HackaPalooza always tells me to bang it out. And honestly it makes sense. I want the crowd to leave the show thinking that guy fucking killed it and I must know who he is. https://t.co/6tte8UlEYj

A lot of the comments in agreement assume playing a warm up set means you’ll play boring music. That’s the end of the topic right there for me. If you don’t know how to open a night without playing boring music you’re doing it wrong.
— Simon Oleary (@IAmDJSimm) December 2, 2019
The DJ is supposed to be playing for the crowd and the party not to get his or her next booking
— Terry Farley (@terrystuckshop) December 2, 2019
This thread is full of a WHOLE lot of WACK and ELITIST energy. Seriously. Who do you think you are telling a DJ to NOT put their all into their set?
I don’t go to shows to see boring sets, opener or not. I go to lose my shit and rage out, from the moment I step in.
— matt 🔜 LAN😈 (@Xavior_Matt) December 1, 2019
No. Being an opener and “banging it out” will break you! Being an opener and respecting the headliner while building the vibe correctly will make you!
— Lowdown (@lowdownmusik) December 2, 2019
So the topic on #EDMTwitter today is about Carnage telling the opening DJs to go all out during their sets by playing whatever they want while not giving a fuck if the headliner gets mad

He’s right to a certain extent. First and most importantly don’t ever play the headliners tracks. And pace your set. Don’t burn out the crowd with a set full of top hits https://t.co/rPszvZTNgQ
— Carlos 🦖 (@yoloafcarlos) December 3, 2019
As long as the opener doesn’t play the headliner’s music, it’s all fair game. https://t.co/cp4RsKoNV8
— Do or Die (@DoOrDieDJ) December 3, 2019
Opener djs are the best part of the night in my opinion.. thats when u educate people on new music and you get to respect the headliner.. itll take you farther in the game than just bangin it out.. in my opinion
