New York Police have arrested Ronny Vargas and Alex Suazo, two organizers of an illegal boat party on August 1st. The party was held on The Liberty Belle, a boat that had several indoor bars and outdoor deck areas. The ship could have reached a capacity of 600, though only 170 people were reported aboard the ship. The party was exposed by a nearby resident on Twitter.

The party was intercepted at Pier 36 on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and boarded at 11:30PM. Vargas and Souza were arrested, as well as the boat’s captain. Though New York is showing a unique downward trend of cases, the states around it are experiencing a higher influx of cases than when the pandemic started. Rebellious party organizers continue to throw underground events despite strict orders from local governments to avoid gatherings.

“I want the business in New York to do well,” said Brewer, the Manhattan borough president, told the New York Times. “But you have to follow the rules in terms of safety and health.”
