Taking the electronic music culture and creating a film about it must be tactful. Unfortunately, for “We Are Your Friends” with Zac Efron, it didn’t do very well. Within months another movie tried taking a jab at the EDM culture with XOXO, featured exclusively on Netflix.
With a plot of becoming a huge DJ through one viral track, the movie takes you on a journey from the aspects of a becoming DJ, people in the industry, and of course the culture and people in the scene.
Although XOXO created a realistic story, backdrop, and spot on music, the real DJ’s had their own opinions on how the movie represented DJ’s and producers and had their say in a funny Twitter thread. Ookay started the Twitter storm as Dillon Francis, Gladiator, GTA, and TJR chimed in on their own experiences and opinions. Mija also had something to say regarding the XOXO film.
so…I watched the h0t new edm movie last night and it was a terribly inaccurate depiction of the music industry
