Ryan Summers is a multi-faceted producer that has found himself in and out of studio for over two decades. He’s a curator of all sorts of music from trance, rock and even a bit of folk. He’s recently found himself back in the studio to curate a brand new album, this time taking a stab at his form of ambient music. Summers found himself in the midst of late night stirs as a result of insomnia and found his particular style of ambient music help carry himself to sleep.

“My interest in ambient music grew after struggling with insomnia for several years. It helped keep my brain occupied on the nights when I couldn’t sleep. Only certain ambient music worked, though. I wanted to see if I could make more of that music.” – Ryan Summers

His newest album ‘F51.01’ is a compilation of that certain ambient music used to ward off the sleepless pits of insomnia. Properly named after the ICD-10 medical billing code for the condition, the 9-track LP features an array of dark ambient soundscapes that borrows a lot of familiar sounds and turns them into deep, hypnotic productions. ‘Native Warning’ is one of those productions of hypnosis that incorporates a slowly rolling basslines that really open listeners up to the depths one can pursue when battling insomnia. This album’s tone is a real reminder that conditions like insomnia take individuals down darker paths.

Darker elements of ‘F51.01’ begin to contrast with lighter tunes such as ‘Well Tuned’ that has zen-like capabilities. What sounds like liuqin strings echoing in a reverberated fashion as you hopefully drift into the long-awaited sleep. ‘Music Box’ is something out of a horror movie and sounds like a piece right before the onslaught of meeting the demon or ghost itself. One of our personal favorites is ‘Φ‘, it’s the kind of turn of turn with an event horizon sort of feel to it. Or perhaps in Ryan Summers case the warmth of the sunrise as he awakens after getting some much need rest or the realization that the sun is rising after laying awake all night… probably the latter.
