Tiësto getting hitched in secrecy shouldn’t surprise anyone, but his location should. Vogue reported all the dirty details on their marriage, revealing they chose a desert in Utah to seal the deal. Both he and his bride Annika Backes got engaged November in the Maldives, and because of their busy schedule pegging down a day was hard. Despite that, the two found an unexpectedly beautiful desert area to serve as the sacred place.

We went to the One and Only in the Maldives for vacation,” Annika remembers. “Unfortunately, for the first nine days we were there it was pouring rain the whole time. Tijs wanted to wait for the perfect sunset, and finally, on our last day, the weather cleared up. Tijs pulled out all the stops and rented out the entire restaurant. I thought we were just going for a romantic dinner, but right when we got to the restaurant I knew something was up. There was a rose petal path leading to one single table, and there was a private band. They had flown in our favorite wine and champagne. I think we were both so excited and nervous that he got down on one knee soon after we got there. It was so romantic and over the top. We were celebrating the rest of the night on the beach and in the water.”

The one with the most pressure for a wedding like this was probably the DJ. “We wanted to find a DJ that could accommodate any taste,” Tiësto says. “He created a vibe that worked for all of our guests. We didn’t want a band because as a DJ you’re a lot more flexible and can adjust to any situation. That’s why I love doing it in the first place! I also like lots of genres of music that I’m not able to play in my own sets, so that was another reason to hire this particular DJ. He can play all my favorite artists, which include anything from Kanye West to indie pop-rock and ballads.”
